What It Does
The tank separates solids from liquid. The dispersal field does the treatment. Effluent leaves the tank, distributes through the field, and percolates down through unsaturated soil where bacteria break down remaining contaminants before the water reaches groundwater.
That process needs soil depth. Without enough unsaturated soil beneath the field, the treatment doesn’t happen properly — which is the whole reason the rules care about vertical separation.
Vertical Separation and Limiting Conditions
Under 15A NCAC 18E, vertical separation means the depth beneath the dispersal field infiltrative surface down to a limiting condition.
A limiting condition is whatever stops the soil from doing its job — bedrock, a seasonal high water table, or a restrictive horizon. Where the distance to it is short, a conventional in-ground field can’t be permitted, and an alternative or engineered design is required instead.
Directives implementing 18E now require the Improvement Permit to state the usable depth to a limiting condition for the long-term acceptance rate, along with maximum trench depth accounting for percent slope. That is genuinely useful documentation to have — it tells you exactly what constraint you are working against.

The Three Regions
Mountains. The 18 mountain counties named in 18E face steep slopes, shallow bedrock and thin soils. Vertical separation is frequently the binding constraint, and most installations go to advanced or engineered designs.
Piedmont. Clay drains slowly. The soil is deep enough, but the long-term acceptance rate is low, which means fields have to be larger or designs have to be more sophisticated.
Coastal Plain. Sandy soils percolate readily, which is generally good. The constraint here is the seasonal high water table — where groundwater rises close to the surface for part of the year, the usable vertical separation shrinks.
